Malama Honua 2016-2017
WOW, junior year is officially over and after 12 years of being at Kamehameha next year will be the last. I am kind of getting emotional. haha. But to my group members: good luck in college, I know you will do amazing things. To myself: make the best of your senior year, it will go by really quickly. Through this sustainability project we encountered many problems that we didn't know how to handle. While reaching out to the organizations we were rejected and not answered multiple times which set us back. A LOT. But, at the end of the semester we had created something so wonderful. After our symposium one of the ladies from Hawaii Green Growth had approached me and told me how impressed she was with our project and our interest within the aloha plus challenge. Till this day we are still in contact with one another and although we are unsure what will happen in the future, I am excited to see where this project will take me. From the beginning my group and I decided that we didn't just want to complete an assignment, we wanted to make a difference and I think we accomplished that.

Wow, it is hard to believe how far we come within this project. In all honesty when we first started this project I was completely lost, and I was unsure of what we would be able to do for this project. I kept trying to think of ways that we would be able to do a project that wasn't going to be similar to anyone else's project for example creating a garden. I wanted to do something that kids our age would actually find interesting, and would hopefully want to continue in our footsteps. Doing this project I realized how belittled students or young adults may look to older people. A lot of our problems occurred in the communication realm, because so many times we were unable to communicate with those in charge of organizations, and since we were just ordinary students with not much title to our names we had this issue. It was so crazy to look back onto our project, and realize what we everything that we have done, and that we may actually have made a difference. If there was anything to improve from this project it would be to allow students to choose their own groups, because possibly performance could be better. Overall, I found this project to be very strenuous, but very interesting in the sense that we realized that although we are young we can make a difference!
There is a lot that our group was able to take away from this project. We learned everything that it takes for a group to accomplish a huge task. We were able to learn about each of our group member's strengths and weaknesses. One major thing that we learned in the process of finding our project is how long it can take to contact someone. When we tried contacting major cooperations we found that they didn't really see us as someone who can benefit the organization. It took us a while for the people to get back to us but eventually we got to talk with someone from Hawaiian Green Growth and got to talk one-on-one with them. We learned of how important sustainability is to our school, our homes, our island, and our lives. Seeing the different projects we can see how much everyone is trying to change our destructive lifestyle. But we are still damaging the island that we live on and love. Somethings that worked out for us is that our project was relatively easy and we were able to complete it in a solid amount of time. We thought we were going to have to create social media pages for the organizations we were working with, but it turns out they were starting to create them this year. We then decided that we would spread awareness of this challenge through videos. One thing that didn't work was keeping up with all the other small tasks that our group was assigned, for example blogposts. It was hard for us to remember to do all the other blogposts that we had to do everyday. But in the end we were able to come out with a solution and were able to present it at the symposium. It was a really interesting project to work on and was actually pretty fun.
SUCCESS! Although I was unable to be at our symposium, from my understanding was that our presentation went very well. Our group was the last to present our project, and therefore the time seemed to drag on, however I was told that everything from the videos to the actual presentation went smoothly and ran very well. I was also told that after the presentation a lady from Hawai'i Green Growth approached Rachel to talk about how impressed she was with our project, and proceeded to talk about her interest within our project. After months of stress we have finally concluded our Symposium which can kind of give us a peace of mind.
TODAY IS THE DAY! Today is the day we have been anxiously awaiting, because it will be the time we finally have to share out all of our projects. We were finally able to get our second video constructed, and now it is all about preparing to present. In class today, we were allowed time to either work or practice for our presentations. We were able to do both, and now we can only hope for the best from later on today's presentation. We understand not many other people besides the students from this class will be there, but hopefully our project will be able to interest someone or impress them.
ITS THE DAY BEFORE THE SYMPOSIUM! So it is officially crunch time, we have our first video completed, but we still needed a bit more film for our second video so today in class after we discussed with the communications guy about where we were in our project, and whatever troubles we had, we left to go and film a few more scenes for our project to complete our second video in it's entirety. Now it is up to us to make sure everything is complete by tomorrow!
These past two day we finally were able to regroup as well as discuss further planning for our videos, and now we have began the constructing process. Today we took time out of class to go and videotape ourselves to complete our first video. In our short clips that we talk we each talk about a different aspect within the Aloha Plus Challenge, and this allows us to in a way “answer” all the people that were previously interviewed about if they knew what the Aloha Plus Challenge was. For both days this all that we were able to get done because with everyone trying to get ready for finals, this was the only time we could find time.
This is the week! Our final week to finish everything for our project before this Friday’s Symposium. We haven’t met up yet together to regroup about our project yet, however we know that we are going to have to be very efficient with our project. The biggest things that we have to finish would have to be our second video, but as as soon as that is taken cared of, the only thing that will need to be finished is prepping for the symposium.
This is Tymane again, and today I had my performance at the Polynesian Cultural Center so that was the only thing I really focused on today. Our performance earned our group the award for exceptional performance, and it such an amazing experience to be able to perpetuate my culture. I think this is important because the same way Hawaiians try to sustain their culture is very similar to Samoans who choose to do so through song and dance.
Today I (Tymane) was not in school therefore not in class, but I heard that it had been another workday for the group. I did not attend school today because I participate in this extracurricular club called the ILH Polynesian Club and we perform at the We Are Samoa festival which is held at the Polynesian Cultural Center, and therefore our mandatory dress rehearsal was today. I was unable to attend school so I am unsure of where the project is at specifically at this moment, but I am still getting updates.
